Good value, friendly wait staff, black beans, free flowing sour cream, Coke products (woohoo!) and tons of vegetarian choices. I, unlike some reviewers, LOVE their salsa. I simply can't get enough of it. Sure, it's not the most authentic Mexican food, but I really enjoy it. The ankle biters like it too.

This food at Su Casa isn't horrible, but it's certainly not great. If you're used to Mexican food anywhere outside of Utah, you'll probably find the food here to be very under seasoned. While I accept that many people here don't love overly spicy food, a lot can still be done to improve what Su Casa is serving and still have it align with the preferences of people here in Salt Lake. Specifically, I'd reconsider your recipes being used for the black beans and for the rice. Both were INCREDIBLY bland, in my opinion. On the upside, I was actually really impressed with the salsa served when I sat down and the iced tea was also very good(this may seem like I'm grasping for anything good to say but the tea was freshly brewed and as dark as my friend's diet coke). I also want to recognize how personable the service was. The server I had was very good and I watched as the manager very graciously moved a couple to a new table because they were sitting next to an AC vent.

Bland and uninspring. I ordered the enchalada, taco plate which barely breached the level of Taco Bell. At $9.00 I expect better quality food.

The most un-Mexican Mexican food I've ever had. I think we can all agree this place would benefit greatly from a spice cabinet. I guess it's fantastic if you are basic. Not horrible but not very good either.

I wouldn't mess with the chicken or tacos but the Salsa Verde burrito was pretty tasty!

I was excited to try a new authentic Mexican Restaurant. Upon arrival I worked up a good appetite trying to park in the tight narrow lot behind the building. I was seated quickly and water and chips brought to the table quickly. Another couple was seated next to us a few minutes later. The waitress took their order first and then took our order. Their food was brought out first with no silverware. They asked the waitress for silverware. A few minutes later the appetizer "Nacho Supreme" arrived with no silverware, napkins or plates. We also asked for silverware. Our soda arrived with the nachos. A minute later the entree arrived giving us a choice of which food to eat cold. The salsa was thin and bland, but the entree was good. Prices for portion size was why I gave 4 stars instead of 3 stars.

Not amazing but not terrible. Okay salsa and chips, and the fried ice cream was pretty good.

Service was good...but the server seemed so frazzled. It's a small place so it's not like she had LOTS of tables. Made it hard to relax. Received the appetizer (cheese crisp...SUPER greasy!!) after the main dishes arrived. (FAST service!) I got a fish taco. It was pretty good. Their chile verde is REALLY good. Prices are pretty reasonable. I'll be back.

Sometimes you do things in life you don't want to do, but I wanted to chill with friends and that meant meeting up at Su Casa. They love the $5.49 lunch deal. It comes with very warm and not too bad tasting chips with a very weird salsa?? Texture is reminiscent of tomato sauce at best. The special is a tostado and an enchilada. For a brief moment I thought I was back eating at the high school cafeteria which is a huge insult, although I did love the hot dogs wrapped in bread dough. Back to the review- most everyone at the table ordered their meal without lettuce. I'm thinking, what's up with that? I now know why they requested that!!! When my dish came out, all I could see was a serious plate of shredded lettuce!!! Are we trying to cover up something here? Maybe the small portion sizes? It was laughable how much lettuce was on that plate, enough for me to make the tossed salad for Easter dinner I was assigned to. The one gal who omitted the lettuce was served almost a third cup sour cream on top of her tostado. She took two bites and was done with the meal. Service was good, but then again, it was just our group of five. Whenever you walk into a restaurant and see the help sitting in the dining room chillin' run to the nearest exit. I need to have a serious talk with this group before the next outing.

I used to make similar food when I was in college: Open a can of refried beans, spread on tostada shell, sprinkle some yellow cheese on, warm up in microwave. Except, I took it one step further and added some olive slices from a can. The food is bland, the salsa tastes fresh out of a can of "mild salsa." They top their dishes with sour cream in instead of guacamole (very Utah). They do have good fresh brewed ice tea and I thank them for that. Our waitress provided us with good service. I thank her for that. But the food reminded me of preparing meals in my dorm room. Seriously, I guess I should thank them for evoking fond memories of college life. I loved college. I've been there a few times but only because my friends wanted to meet there for lunch. I need some chilies. I think my taste buds fell asleep.

Went there for lunch break to get a to-go order. I saw that they advertised their lunch special at 5.50 or something like that, so i was like... deal. Go in, realize that the lunch special is just one item in the menu (always the same) and it was a bean festival... nothing fun or "meaty" per se. So I ended up just dropping the 10 bucks for 3 fish tacos, that were actually delish, but it kinda made me upset that the lunch special was just one item, and a pretty lame one. Other than that, the service was really nice, and they had my food in less than 10 minutes. Would I go back?... not sure. But it's a possibility. I think it's worth giving it a chance.

I love Mexican food. I also love Su Casa. If you also love Mexican food, you most likely will say that Su Casa is an abortion of Mexican food. And you know what, it is. But I still love it. Su Casa is a guilty pleasure. I love the salsa that some others have complained about. It's addicting. I think they lace it with crack cocaine because I can't get enough of it. I also love a single item on their menu: The chicken burrito, enchilada style. I've dined at Su Casa and Su Casa's sister restaurant in Logan, El Sol, for years. This is the only thing I've ever ordered. It tastes just right for me. It's drowned in sauce and cheese and sometimes it is just the comfort food that I want. It's not great Mexican food, and anyone who says it is has never tried great, authentic Mexican food. But it is yummy for me, and I'll keep going back anytime I'm in Salt Lake or Logan. Go ahead and put your food snobbishness aside and give it a try, you might like it.

Free chip appetizer wasnt good because of the cheap ketchup like salsa. I was also disappointed in the entree as my chicken was really dry and the favors were so mild I forgot I was eating Mexican. Friendly service, but sub-par food

I have been not once, not twice, but several times. Its very inexpensive and therefore a common place to come up when eating with a group. I've tried my best to enjoy it but I am thoroughly convinced that the only tools to be found in the kitchen are a can opener and a microwave. The food is bland, often lukewarm, the salsa is definitely store bought generic, the rice and beans merely decoration, the menu dull, and I have my doubts about the vegetables. The only good things I can say are there is ample parking and room to sit and the servers are nice. However I have never eaten there and not been nauseous 15 minutes later. I would give it one star alone because this is one of two places in my life where my stomach returned my meal. That goes for my wife as well, who is from Utah herself, yet could not stomach it. Avoid.

It's not that the food at Su Casa is inedible or digusting. It's just uninspired and bland. And calling it "Mexican" food is erroneous, and maybe even libelous. The entrees are no more "Mexican" than what you get at Taco Bell. The menu is full of the typical americanized, beany, cheesy entrees that you can find in countless strip malls across the country, in restaurants with names like La Hacienda and El Toreador. And what's with the salsa? This stuff is just full-on horrible. It's a tasteless puree that is indistinguishable from canned tomato sauce. I just can't imagine anyone liking it. I'm stunned they would serve the same drek after all these years. There is no reason to eat here. What's better? Other than the obvious Red Iguana, Rio Grande, Tres Hombres, Miramar, and Mi Ranchita, just to name a few. (I'd name Frida Bistro, but they are in a class by themselves.)

Do not eat here. Disgusting. My husband and I are here well over a year ago and we still refer to it when we are talking about disgusting things. This place has become the standard for gross in our restaurant guide. The restaurant smelled strongly of urine and I don't even think the cheese was real.

This place is solid and always will be. Not everyone is trying to be "authentic mexican" and no one cares how many times you ate street tacos in Ensenada on your 3 day booze cruise. It's great Mexican American food. It's priced greatly and I've never had bad service.

I ordered a smothered burrito with cheese and onions it was 10.00 and it was horrible! Not only did it take forever to get my food but they stuffed it with ground beef! Ten dollars for ground beef ghoulish! No thank you!

Nice staff, good food but all their rice has chicken stock. They should be more sensitive to vegetarian and vegan patrons.

Sopapillas!!! I finally found a restaurant in Utah that has them! (Actually, there's Las Glorias in Draper, but theirs are nothing like the ones I've ever had anywhere before--in a bad way) These are not perfectly light, but they aren't super dense, either. The Cheese Enchilada was everything I demand--cheesy, hot, and flavorful--and more--a few onions without having to request them, and a little hint of cinnamon in the sauce was a welcome addition. Son's Lunch Combo Special (Bean and Rice Burrito, smothered in Enchilada Sauce, and Bean Tostada) was also great. The prices are great, and the ambiance charming.

Canned meat, jar sauces, ketchup based salsa...everything is premade frozen and can garbage.

Everything everyone else has written is true, but, with respect to my friends and fellow Yelpers, the low ratings are out of context. Su Casa is an Americanized Mexican restaurant that offers decent tasting food for good prices, with some nice outdoor seating and free parking. Don't compare it to Red Iguana; compare it to a casual-service Del Taco, or that chain your parents always want to go to. Yes, their "salsa" tastes like spicy ketchup, but I'd call that "taco sauce." Not the best to serve with chips, but the chips are tasty. And, as my anti-onion wife will attest, there are no crunchy onions to overwhelm. The food we got, while perhaps a bit watered down to an American palette, was still tasty. Super salty black beans, nice jumpy cheese in the enchilada, a hardshell taco stuffed with (relatively unseasoned) ground beef and topped to the brim with veggies, and, an honest-to-G-d black bean taco salad, once again without onions, that my wife was so thrilled to find. Maybe this isn't your kind of place -- and I can understand how it wouldn't be. But so long as my wife craves veggie taco salads without onions (something hard to find and hard to execute it seems) we'll probably be back.

Very fresh food, friendly service, & value-priced. The name is accurate: this is a small building with a relaxed atmosphere. Parking can be tight. The lunch special is excellent for the price. Black bean salad is fresh & healthy.

My husband had lunch there and thought he had found a new Mexican restaurant. So we went for dinner later in the week. So sorry, but my meal was inedible -- ordered one cheese and one chicken enchilada. No beans or rice came with it, which I knew, but were included on my husband's plate. My plate was swimming in grease -- took two napkins to blot about 2/3 of it. Chicken enchilada was ground beef instead, and with an odd seasoning. Cheese was not melty, but chewy. Tasted spouse's beans and rice -- both flavorless. I grew up in So. Cal -- I know good Mexican food. This was not. Service was pleasant and prompt. Watched adjacent table being cleared -- sort of, with some food left on top. And then there was the constant running back and forth of a carpet sweeper adjacent to us during our meal. Sigh. Shall keep looking.

I had such a pleasant experience here the other day. A friendly server who was able to make several good recommendations. The prices are very reasonable. They were quick, and the food was amazing! I'll be back!!

This food was about as bland as any Mexican food I've ever had. I ordered a relleno which when it arrived tasted like it had been fried in old motor oil. The server kindly replaced it with a bland cheese enchilada which was palatable. It has been ten years since I last tried this place. Time has not improved its vintage flavor. If you want cheap, go to a taco cart instead.

  • Aditi H.

It $5.49 for their lunch special, so its safe to say that I was not going in expecting a great meal. Like all the other reviews, what they try to pass off as salsa is well... not salsa. The food itself is average at best. Its not bad food, just not the kind of food I would drive a distance to eat. Dont think I am going back

I love this place. 2nd time coming in and the staff is always very nice. It's clean and the food is delish!! I cant believe how fast the food comes out. Def my new favorite place for mexican food!!

I have eaten here occasionally over the past couple years, and found the quality to be hit or miss. I definitely understand the reviews complaining about bland, average, or underwhelming dishes coming out. That said, its a favorite of my parents, so I end up eating here with them more than I would probably choose if I were picking the place. I went there with them tonight and had a great, affordable meal ordering the fish tacos, which were much tastier than I was expecting and really made for a very satisfying meal. They were rich and tangy with fresh limes and amazing tortillas... The table service has always been very prompt and friendly and tonight was no exception. Super friendly, great waitress. As for the salsa others have commented on, its not my personal favorite, but my folks love it. And the chips are really good. Su Casa isn't in the same league as Red Iguana, but its also half the price. I think they might have had some rough patches in the past, but I'm happy to see they're turning things around. I'll be happy to keep coming back.

I've been to Su Casa a few times, since it is close to my house. Recently I went with two friends for lunch. We decided to sit on the patio which was very enjoyable. The food is average, however for the price and portion it is reasonable. I always take the house salsa into account when reviewing Mexican restaurants, it was below average. Great atmosphere, and great service brought my review to 3 stars, but the food and salsa are 2 stars. For a cheap/quick Mexican restaurant meal check it out, but don't go out of your way.

Whelp. Some things never change. Su Casa is still as disgusting and bland as the last time I was there. The staff is friendly and the location is convenient--and there ends the goodness of Su Casa. This is seriously, seriously bad food. It is so bland and gross it is hard to know where to begin. The ground beef has a mush like consistency. The salsa is basically ketchup. Nothing seems fresh. I've never been in the back, but I imagine giant bags of iceberg lettuce, cans of meat, and as many processed variations of foods as possible. Ugh. This place needs a serious makeover--it's not even that cheap to excuse how bad the food is. How is this place so busy? Do this many people in Utah just NOT have tastebuds? blech, bleck, blah. I hope I can convince my boss to take this place out of the rotation. Grossville, USA.

Chips n salsa are freakin' bomb! This place has some great food and it's not too pricey, especially if you have their specials. great service and you know it's gotta be good when there's a line out the door just for lunch!

  • Scott R.

I really try and not come here. But occasionally, since it so close to my work I end up eating here. Its alright food overall, if you like your Mexican on the bland side. And the salsa has the texture of ketchup. I will definitely remember these things before I think about coming here again. They do have a very friendly staff. Who are always speedy about everything.

Nice enough decor - great service - super friendly - super fast. I really wanted to like this place but the food could not have been more bland. Very americanized and just no flavor. About how I would have made mexican food when I was 12. A bunch of cheese.

I like this place - affordable and friendly. I'll admit, the food isn't extremely exciting, but sometimes I just want something simple. I really like the black bean salad, and my boyfriend always gets the veggie burrito.

I've been here so many times I can't even count them. This place is inexpensive. The service always rocks. The food is dependable and delicious. I'm not psyched on their chips and salsa, but other than that I love the #12 and the Veggie Burrito Grande. Seriously my favorite.

Since the update of the interior years ago there has been very little effort put in to make Su Casa a better dining experience. The service is hit or miss and the salsa has become tomato paste. The meal still hits the spot some days, but even with it being the closest place to my work I may only go once a month. There will be a place in my heart for Su Casa, but I look forward to them stepping up their food with some more spices. I have just felt that everything is so bland as of late. You will not get any bad food here, it just won't hit it out of the park.

Went here for dinner. The restaurant has a large outdoor seating area facing the street with a private parking lot located behind the restaurant. The outdoor seating is very inviting and adds to the curb appeal of the restaurant. You have to go inside to find a table. We were seated very quickly but it took over ten minutes for the lone waitress to get to us and even then she was often swamped and had to rely on the bus boys for help. Clearly she was lacking coworkers as the host was waiting tables as well. The service improved after the initial false start. They gave us chips and salsa which was a nice gesture. However the salsa really is not salsa, it is just some canned version of taco sauce. The chips were clearly not fresh although they tasted okay. When they refilled the "salsa" it was from a different can because it was much hotter than before. We ordered the special burrito with shredded beef and the chicken salad. The dishes had the typical Americanized look to them as you often see these days. Unfortunately the shredded beef was poorly cooked and lacked any flavor at all and was entirely too bland. It tasted like something I boiled in a pot at home my stove. The refried beans and Spanish rice served with the dish fared a little better. The refried beans were a little runny but mixing it with the rice helped even things out to a thicker consistency. The chicken in the chicken salad was as bland and tasteless as you can possibly imagine, the mix in the salad did not improve it much either. The meat is clearly not grilled and I wonder how it is cooked. While the location is nice and the outdoor seating is fun, overall the food was disappointing, lacking any imagination or inspiration resulting in a poor bland taste, especially the chicken. Coupled with the lackluster service first and it was a bit disappointing. The entrees are not terribly expensive which is why this review has two stars.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
